Hawkes Bay 2010-11
What can I say except that Hawkes Bay did us proud; not just
in the events, organisation, food and convivial company, but
also the weather. Apart from the first day that is, when the
typical summer norwester winds caused havoc with the power
lines in the valley, cutting the power for 5 hours.
But no problem to the HBNC catering crew, who
innovatively produced scones on the BBQ for morning tea, as well
as meats, salad and hot drinks for the delegates' lunch.
On the first day, TVNZ sent a film crew to cover our "nakation",
which screened on the 6pm TV1 news that night. They arrived in
Napier at 9.30am on a flight from Wellington and left the
grounds at 2pm. Between 2pm and 6pm, the tape was compiled and
edited, and it was on your TV screens at 6.20pm before the
cameraman and reporter were even back in Wellington! I asked
them to not use pixilation, a request they complied with,
carefully taking shots that would satisfy even the most ardent
complainers (considering it was to be screened at 6pm). Having
conservative TVNZ cover such an event is a huge coup and shows
that naturism is becoming more acceptable in mainstream media,
as in the past, it has always been only TV3 ‘brave’ enough to
screen such ‘risqué’ stories. A radio interview with Barbi from
HBNC was also played on Radio NZ the same night.
The local community radio station in Hawke’s Bay (Radio
Kidnappers) gave me a digital microphone, which I could use at
the rally to broadcast ‘live’. So the ‘Naked Reporter’
interviewed many rally goers and even managed to talk to Abby
Scott, the reporter from TVNZ, so turning the tables on her.
This will be broadcast on Radio Kidnappers in the next few weeks
and I will send the link to you after it is aired. It was fun
being the ‘Naked Reporter’ and I think everyone I spoke to
enjoyed the experience.
With the theme of the rally being ‘A Taste of the Bay’, each day
had a different taste, from sport and leisure, fresh produce,
health and relaxation to art deco. Apart from the usual sports
programme, social events included a concert and a “Bach to
Bacchus” night, (toga a must, except for the unfortunate
slaves)! We drank wine and were hand-fed grapes, while being
kept entertained by two violinists who performed many classical
tunes and Christmas carols.
New Years Eve was seen in with a live duo and fireworks. The
next morning, a catered cooked and continental breakfast saved
those of us with sore heads from cooking our own and what
teamwork! If one particular food ran out, it was immediately
replenished. Then that night, after a catered dinner, a
hypnotist kept us entertained into the night, with willing
subjects doing things that they couldn’t remember – but we can!
What a great start to the New Year!
The 5th day was themed ‘Art Deco’ and in keeping with the 1930s,
deco hat making and vintage car rides were the order of the day,
while listening to a duo playing 1930s songs. After a raid at
gun point by a rough lot of agents looking for the notorious Ken
Capone, the entertainment for the final night at the Sunflower
Speakeasy had the Twin City Stompers band playing on well into
the night.
The rally committee have to be congratulated for organising such
a excellent week. I know how much work is involved with
organising a rally and so to all of you, thank you for a great
time and for being such hospitable hosts.
More details and information on how to register will be available soon.
