Beaches
Enjoy safe swimming between the flags at Foxton or Himatangi beaches. Walk
the sand dunes between the Manawatu and Rangitikei river mouths. Try the
fishing at Tangimoana or Scott's Ferry.
The inauguarl Himatangi Beach Festival takes place from January 18 to 20
(Wellington Anniversary weekend). Included are a round of the
ThunderCat national championship, a surfcasting competition, mini quads for
children, blo carts and a craft fair.

The Square, Palmerston North
The heart of the city, with 7 hectares of lawns, trees, lakes and gardens.
Many major businesses are within walking distance of the Square. The City
library is in the NW corner of the Square. Numerous restaurants and bars line
the central city.

Victoria Esplanade,
Palmerston North
A lovely riverside park featuring a rose garden, children's adventure
playground and a number of scenic walks. It is also home to the historic
Victoria House, which was originally Palmerston North's post office.
Palmerston North Walks
Walks in the area include the 10km Manawatu Riverside Walkway, which passes
through The Esplanade, and the self-guided City Heritage Trail.

Manawatu Gorge & River
Manawatu Gorge, a massive ravine formed by the 160km Manawatu
River, divides the Ruahine and Tararua Ranges and extends some 6 kilometres.
Activities in the area include jetboating, rafting, abseiling, horse trekking
and fishing. In rocky Manawatu Gorge there's world-class brown trout fishing.
Manawatu Gorge Walk
Choose the 10 minute walk to the totara tree, the hour loop or traverse the
gorge. The Information Centre (52 The Square, ph 06 3501922) has
details of activities in the area, including horse trekking, bridge swinging,
abeseiling and rafting. Manawatu Jet Tours
(phone 06 326 8190) offers jetboating excursions on the Manawatu River.
Manawatu Fly Fishing based
in Ashhurst offers fly fishing trips and guidance on the Manawatu River.
Wanganui National Park
The 74,231ha park offers numerous tramping and river activities, including
canoeing, rafting and jetboating.on the Whanganui River.
This 290km long river is the longest navigable waterway in the country and
the second longest river in the North
Island.
Wanganui River Road
The river road accesses Matawhiri's Old Flourmill, the church and convent at
Jerusalem - the former home of Sister Mary Aubert and later famous New
Zealand poet James K Baxter - the historic settlement of Pipiriki and the
Bridge to Nowhere.

Durie Hill Elevator & Memorial Tower, Wanganui
The only earthbound elevator in New Zealand and one of only two
in the world. The tower offers fine views over Wanganui.
Wanganui Riverboat Centre

only historic paddle steamer, and the only operational tunnel-drive vessel,
